Partnerships
As part of the Pacific Northwest Center for Global
Security mission to address global security issues, the Center establishes
formal partnerships with academic and non-governmental organizations. These
partnerships help the U.S. government leverage resources and enhance its leadership on issues of nonproliferation and
global security.

University
of Washington – The
Pacific Northwest National Laboratory and the University of Washington
have established The Joint Institute for Global and
Regional Security Studies (IGRSS). The Institute
works to enhance international security education at the
University of Washington by expanding the University’s teaching,
research and public outreach programs on the nonproliferation of
weapons of mass destruction and related international security issues.
It also forms the basis for the interaction between the PNNL science
and engineering staff and academic students involved in
international studies. Also:

National
Bureau of Asian Research (NBR)
– The NBR, a nonprofit,
nonpartisan institution, conducts advanced research on
policy-relevant issues in Asia. It also serves as the global
clearinghouse for Asia research conducted by specialists and
institutions worldwide. NBR maintains research programs on security
concerns, economic growth, governance questions, politics, international
relations, and U.S. interests in Northeast Asia, Eurasia, Southeast
Asia, South Asia, and the Asia Pacific regionally.

The
Nuclear Threat Initiative (NTI) – NTI is working to close the growing and increasingly dangerous gap
between the threat from nuclear, biological and chemical weapons and
the global response by (1) taking direct action to reduce the threat through start-up, pilot,
and model initiatives that the government and private sector could
replicate on a larger scale, and (2) encouraging others to take action to
reduce the threat by being a catalyst for action, working to promote
dialogue, building common ground, and increasing public awareness of
the gaps between the threat and the response. (On behalf
of NTI, Battelle Memorial Institute prepared
Debt
for Nonproliferation: A Concept Development Proposal for the Design
and Operation of a Russia Nonproliferation Fund in
2002.)

FRAEC
– The Foundation for Russian American Economic
Cooperation is a strategic partner with PNNL in the implementation of
the Nuclear Cities Initiative. FRAEC, established in 1990, is a premier
NGO in business and trade work in Russia, and represents a major
stakeholder in Russian affairs in the Northwest. The PNNL/FRAEC
partnership have jointly established International Development Centers
in two closed Nuclear Cities in the Russian Federation. These centers,
the IDCs, are established to assist the cities in the transition to a
more open market economy.

Washington
State China Relations Council – The Washington State
China Relations Council, founded in 1979 following the normalization of
diplomatic relations between the United States and China, is a private
and non-profit trade association dedicated to promoting stronger
commercial, educational, and cultural relations between the state of
Washington and the People’s Republic of China. The Council is the
oldest non-governmental statewide trade association dealing specifically
with China.

Washington
Council on International Trade (WCIT) – A
non-profit association of businesses, consular groups, academia, and
private individuals, WCIT provides trade awareness on key federal and
state trade-related issues. For almost three decades, it has been
advocating on the benefits of a flourishing trade base.
